Professor Boulton has held concurrent positions in the Medieval Institute and the Department of History at the University of Notre Dame. His research interests are focused on the history of nobilities, hierarchies of honor, and heraldic emblems in Western Europe as well as diplomatics and sigillography. He has published extensively on these subjects, including The Knights of the Crown: The Monarchical Orders of Knighthood in Late Medieval Europe 1325-1520. He has also co-edited The Ideology of Burgundy: The Promotion of National Consciousness, 1364-1565.
