Jacob's academic pursuits revolve around questions of political thought and legal culture in the Early and Central Middle Ages, primarily in the late and post-Carolingian world. This includes perceptions and practice of power, questions of lordship and tyranny, definitions of nobility and aristocracy, and ideologies of medieval governance. His secondary interests include diplomacy and vernacular literature, in particular with regard to what they reveal about power relationships and political ideals.
