“The Medieval World of Goods: Marseille and Lucca, 1330-1450”

Dan Smail, Professor of History, Harvard University, has written extensively on both Mediterranean Europe in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries and on “deep history” (early global history). His book, On Deep History and the Brain, proposed the idea of a “neurohistory,” a history that explores how cultural structures shape patterns of the brain-body system and alter forms of endocrine regulation. His current project is “Goods and Debts in Medieval Mediterranean Europe,” a study of transformations in material culture through the lens of debt recovery.
