The 2015 Conway Lectures

John V. Fleming

Professor Fleming is the Louis W. Fairchild Professor of English and Comparative Literature emeritus at Princeton University. A 1958 graduate of the University of the South (Sewanee), Prof. Fleming was a Rhodes Scholar at Oxford, and got his Ph.D. at Princeton, where he has taught since 1965. He has published extensively in the fields of Medieval English and European literature, medieval art history, and the history of Christian thought and spirituality. He is a past president of the Medieval Academy of America, and he writes a blog, “Gladly Lerne, Gladly Teche.”

Today’s lecture will be followed by a short reception.

Lectures 1 and 3 in the Conway series will be delivered by Prof. Fleming on October 29 and November 5.

In 2002, the Medieval Institute inaugurated a lecture series in honor of Robert M. Conway, a 1966 graduate of Notre Dame, trustee of the University, and long-time friend and supporter of the Medieval Institute. The annual Conway Lectures bring senior scholars of international distinction to Notre Dame each fall to speak on topics across a variety of disciplines. The lectures are then published by the University of Notre Dame Press.

Future Conway Lectures will be delivered by William Courtenay in 2016 and Susan Rankin in 2017.
