Stuart McManus Lecture: “Renaissance Humanism and Iberia’s Global Empires”

-

Location: DeBartolo 155

Stuart M. McManus (M.A. Warburg Institute, Ph.D. Harvard) joins us from the Stevanovich Institute on the Formation of Knowledge and Department of Classics at the University of Chicago. He works on the global history of empires with a focus on Latin America and Iberian Asia and has published widely on the cultural history of Latin America, ethnohistory and the classical tradition. He argues that the classical rhetorical tradition was a key technology of empire and evangelization in the early modern Americas, Africa and Asia, and can best be understood from a global perspective.
