Medieval Studies Working Group

-

Location: MI Seminar Room, 715J Hesburgh Library

Session 5: Art, Italy, and the East

Olivia Remie Constable (Professor of History and Robert M. Conway Director of the Medieval Institute, University of Notre Dame): “Gentile Bellini, Venice, and a Late Medieval European Vision of Egypt”

Brandon Cook (Graduate Ph.D. Student, Medieval Institute, University of Notre Dame): “Mosaics of Holy Women in the Cappella Palatina”

The Medieval Studies Working Group provides an opportunity for junior and senior scholars to engage in larger questions of methodology, the viability of interdisciplinarity, and the specific forms it might take within the umbrella of “medieval studies” as well as within specific disciplines. Speakers will be encouraged to highlight their methodological approach either in the body of their talk or in the subsequent question and answer session.

By placing practitioners of different methodologies and disciplines into direct contact with each other, the organizers envision the Working Group as a place of active dialogue and debate between scholars not only from different departments, but also from inside and outside the Notre Dame community.

Copies of the readings are available on the web site http://blogs.nd.edu/medieval/session-5/); hard copies are available in the Medieval Institute main office (715 Hesburgh).

Any who are interested are welcome to join the speakers for dinner afterward at The Mark (in Eddy Street Commons). There is no need to RSVP for the working group session, but please let the organizers know if you would like to attend dinner.
