Marjorie Housley on "The Social Politics of Shame: Disgrace and Dissent in the Táin Bó Cúailnge"

Marjorie Housley is a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of English at the University of Notre Dame, with graduate minors in Gender Studies and Irish Studies. Her dissertation examines the ethics of emotion in medieval English, Irish, and Scandinavian heroic literature. This presentation, taken from her third dissertation chapter, examines the role of shame in the Táin Bó Cúailnge and related tales, arguing that shame acts not only as a form of social control but also as a way to criticize the ethos of heroism that inculcates it.
