John Van Engen arrived at Notre Dame in 1977 and has earned widespread recognition for his success in building the medieval studies program at Notre Dame and for his contributions more generally to the field of medieval studies. He will retire in December of 2017, having directed 30 dissertations with more on the way, in fields ranging from monastic to military history, from late medieval Prague to the history of inquisition.

This conference will honor John’s retirement by inviting his former students to reflect on the methodologies they have learned from him and incorporated into their work. It will attempt to discern the common features of his approach to historical texts and institutions. Above all, it will encourage reflection on John’s historiographical principles and his understanding of the field of medieval studies, its past, present, and future.
