Irish Studies Lecture (co-sponsored): “An Archeology of Female Monasticism in Medieval Ireland” by Dr. Tracy Collins (University College Cork)

-

Location: Room 1050 Jenkins Nanovic Halls

Tracy Collins

Dr. Tracy Collins of University College Cork will discuss her research dealing with female monasticism in the medieval period.

Female monasticism was different in essence and purpose to that of male monasticism. It is misleading to compare them directly. An engendered archaeological approach to the two kinds of monasticisms permits a more nuanced study, highlighting how the forms of male and female monasticism had different and complementary roles in wider medieval society.
