A note from Nicole: "This essay draft derives from a dissertation chapter, and I would appreciate feedback as I edit it into article form. Please note that the figures will be pared down substantially; I have left them as is to give you a fuller visual picture of the material, which may be unfamiliar."

 Lunch will be served; let me know ASAP if you have any dietary restrictions (there will already be plenty of vegetarian food).
