MI Working Group: Samantha Slaubaugh, "Performing Pain in Rapture: The Liturgical Context of Pain in the Vida of Douceline of Digne"

This presentation will introduce the southern French beguine community, the Ladies of Roubaud, and discuss the role of pain in the liturgical performance of the community’s founder, Douceline of Digne, depicted in her 14th century Occitan vida. Looking particularly at the examples of Douceline’s ecstasies on Good Friday, Samantha will explore how Douceline's performance of pain glosses the meaning of the feast and instructs her beguine community how to celebrate the day accordingly.
