History of Philosophy Workshop: Francesco Mazzo, "Marsilio Ficino: Philosopher and Political Thinker"

Please join us as we continue our lunchtime history of philosophy workshops! Each meeting will consist of a presentation by a graduate student or faculty on a project that they are working on in the history of philosophy, followed by a period of comments/questions from the other participants. The workshop is designed to give grad students and faculty the opportunity to develop ideas and receive helpful feedback on projects/papers in a friendly and low stakes environment.

ABSTRACT: For many scholars of Renaissance thought Marsilio Ficino is the first great example of a courtier philosopher, far from civil and political commitments. My thesis project aims instead to highlight Ficino's political/educative role in the Florence of Cosimo and Lorenzo de' Medici, and his important political reflections. In this talk I will provide an overview of my research, focusing on two texts in particular: the introductions to Plato's Minos and Statesman.
