Lecture: Erin Walsh, "The Suffering Self in Syriac Poetry"

-

Location: 200 O'Shaughnessy Hall (View on map.nd.edu)

We welcome you to attend the second meeting of the MI working group, Ordering Knowledge in Poems and Homilies in Late Antique Religions. Led by professors Jeff Wickes, Hildegund Müller, and Alexis Torrance, the group focuses on how late antique and early medieval religious media, particularly poems and homilies, conceptualized and ordered the world.

Joining us from the University of Chicago, Professor Erin Walsh will be presenting a section of her book project on the reception of biblical women within Syriac and Greek liturgical poetry. Her lecture will focus on the exemplarity of the female body, particularly the maternal body, in pain. Professor Walsh has kindly supplied us with her article “Giving Voice to Pain: New Testament Narratives of Healing in the Poetry of Jacob of Serugh,” which presents some of her earlier research on the topic; however, her presentation will be designed such that prior reading is not a requirement to join the discussion.

For questions and to RSVP, please email mfritz3@nd.edu. We hope that you can join us for this event!
