Professor Fernández-Armesto does not respect disciplinary boundaries and transgresses traditional fields. Recently he has worked on the history of non-human cultural creatures, the history of language, and devising new, global approaches to history. His work has appeared in 27 languages. Recent awards: World History Association Book Prize and Tercentenary Medal of the Society of Antiquaries, 2007; major grants from the Fundación del Pino, Madrid, 2008-10, 2016-18; Reina Victoria Eugenia Distinguished Visiting Chair, Universidad Complutense de Madrid, 2010; Gran Cruz de la Orden de Alfonso X el Sabio, 2016.
