Seminar with Henry Maguire
Henry Maguire, professor emeritus of art history, Johns Hopkins University, will lead a seminar for graduate students and faculty entitled “They Worshipped the Creature rather than the Creator: Animals in Eighth-Century Art and Polemic.”
Prof. Maguire received his Ph.D. from Harvard University, taught at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and served as director of Byzantine studies at Dumbarton Oaks before joining the Johns Hopkins faculty in 2000. A prolific author with many scholarly articles, Prof. Maguire’s book-length publications include Art and Eloquence in Byzantium and “The Icons of Their Bodies”: Saints and Their Images in Byzantium.
