CJ Jones
Robert M. Conway Director of the Medieval Institute
Professor of German Studies
CJ Jones joined Notre Dame and became a Faculty Fellow of the Medieval Institute in 2012 and was appointed Robert M. Conway Director in 2025. Their vision for the Medieval Institute includes enhanced student experiences, international collaboration, and continued support for interdisciplinary research.
Professor Jones earned a Ph.D. in Comparative Literature and Literary Theory from the University of Pennsylvania and holds an appointment as Professor of German Studies. Their interdisciplinary research draws together history, literature, music, liturgy, and manuscript studies to explore how religious women negotiated gendered and religious structures of authority. Their work has been supported by the DAAD, the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, the Notre Dame Institute for Advanced Study, and the National Humanities Center.

Megan J. Hall, Ph.D. (English, '16)
Associate Director
Megan J. Hall joined the Medieval Institute in 2015. In her administrative role, Dr. Hall directs the staff and daily operations of the Medieval Institute, including communications, budget, and special events. She also researches, publishes, and teaches in her areas of specialty: medieval women's literacy and education, manuscript studies, digital humanities, and the effects of landscape and environment on the production of texts and text technologies.
Dr. Hall earned her Ph.D. in Medieval English Literature from the University of Notre Dame and her M.A. and B.A. in English Literature from the University of Georgia. She has taught courses on writing and modern and medieval English literature at the University of Notre Dame, the University of Georgia, Augusta State University, the University of North Georgia, and Athens Technical College.
She has authored a number of publications including book chapters and invited essays in Journal of the Early Book Society, Early Middle English, and History of Education Quarterly. Most recently she has been invited to contribute to two podcasts with episodes on "Women's Education and Literacy in England, 1066–1540" for HEQ&A and "Learning about Learned Medieval Women with Dr. Megan J. Hall" for Meeting in the Middle Ages.

Denis Robichaud
Director of Graduate Studies
John and Patrice Kelly Associate Professor of Liberal Studies
Robichaud’s research is on the long history of Platonism from 270-1499, a period that stretches from the death of Plotinus (270), the founder of a philosophical movement commonly known as Neoplatonism, until the death of Ficino (1499), who is single handedly responsible for integrating the largest body of Greek philosophical texts into late medieval Latin philosophy. He therefore studies what could be considered the long Middle Ages, a period that might also be divided into (late) ancient, medieval, and Renaissance philosophy. He is especially interested in the history of Platonism and its intersections with religious traditions. Read his full bio on his faculty fellow page.

Christopher Liebtag Miller
Associate Teaching Professor
Director of Undergraduate Studies and Engagement
Professor Miller serves the institute and its undergraduates as the Director of Undergraduate Studies and connects the institute to the wider Michiana area through his work as Director of Engagement. He teaches courses in German language and literature and his research concentrates on Middle High German literature and the cultural and social history of the Medieval German Empire. He is particularly interested in literary representations of competition and their relationship to aristocratic economies of symbolic capital during the 12th and 13th centuries. The Medieval Studies Podcast
Meeting in the Middle Ages is the Medieval Institute’s podcast. Our goal is to answer the questions "what do medievalists do, and how do they do it?" Episodes—a new one each month—are built around informal conversations between our hosts, Ben and Will, and medievalist scholars and graduate students. We discuss how they became medievalists, what led them to their current research, the resources they use, and how they use them.
