Workshop on Calcidius

“Calcidius: A Latin Commentary on Plato’s Timaeus”

This workshop begins at 9:30 a.m. at McKenna Hall (Room 106) on Friday, March 27, and continues through the day until 5:30 p.m., resuming on Saturday, March 28, at 9:30 a.m. and continuing until 12:45 p.m.

Calcidius’ commentary on part of Plato’s Timaeus is a very rare philosophical commentary in Latin, dated in the 4th c. AD.  Most often this text has been mined for its source material, but this mini-conference will focus on the nature of the text itself. Traditionally the commentary has been grouped with Latin Christian Neo-Platonism, but that label has increasingly come into question.

Speakers include: Hildegund Müller, Béatrice Bakhouche, John Magee, Christina Hoenig, Gretchen Reydams-Schils, and George Karamanolis. (See the attached poster for the titles of presentations.)
