Location: 715J Hesburgh Library (Medieval Institute Seminar Room) (View on map.nd.edu)

Miriam Decock, a professor in Biblical studies and early Christianity at Dublin City University, will join us virtually to present a lecture entitled "Origen's Homilies as a Space for the Mediation of the Micro- and Macro-World(s) of Scripture." In this lecture, she will introduce her current book project on Origen's Homilies on the Psalms, which reassesses Origen as homilist by comparing this set of texts with his Homilies on Jeremiah. A secondary aim of the book is to think about the homily genre (in Origen's hands) in light of his exegetical homilies. In both settings, Origen works verse by verse through the biblical text with his audience, drawing them into the world within the
text at hand. In her presentation, Professor Decock will discuss some exemplary passages which suggest to her that the Greek homiletic material complicates our understanding of Origen as preacher.

This workshop is organized by the Ordering Knowledge in Poems and Homilies in Late Antique Religions working group.
