Notre Dame Press Releases Fall 2023 Catalog
The University of Notre Dame Press is excited to present our Fall 2023 catalog. This season’s titles engage a variety of topics, including theology, philosophy, medieval studies, American foreign policy, and creative writing.
Some highlights and campus partnerships include:
- In Generals and Admirals, Criminals and Crooks: Dishonorable Leadership in the U.S. Military, award-winning author Jeffrey J. Matthews examines bad leadership in American military history over the past one hundred years, beginning with war crimes in the Philippine-American War and ending with the Fat Leonard corruption scandal.
- The Rivers Are Inside Our Homes, part of the Notre Dame Review Book Prize series, features a collection of poems written by Cuban-American poet Victoria María Castells, handling the themes of loss and exile, aging generations, fable and fairy tale, marriage and hurt, with the island of Cuba at their heart.
- Thomas R. Parker’s American Presidents in Diplomacy and War: Statecraft, Foreign Policy, and Leadership chronicles the major foreign policy crises faced by twelve American presidents in order to uncover the recurring patterns of successful and less successful uses of diplomatic, economic, and military power.
- Two books by Nobel-Prize winner Elie Wiesel are receiving new editions. In Five Biblical Portraits, Wiesel brings ancient religious Leaders to literary life, framing his biblical commentary with pressing and enduring questions as a survivor and witness to the Holocaust. In Four Hasidic Masters and Their Struggle against Melancholy, Wiesel presents the stories of four Hasidic masters, framing their biographies in the context of his own life.
- Two new books in the Catholic Ideas for a Secular World series include Thomas S. Hibbs’s A Theology of Creation: Ecology, Art, and Laudato Si’, which offers the first sustained philosophical treatment of Pope Francis’s Laudato Si’, and Steven D. Smith’s The Disintegrating Conscience and the Decline of Modernity, which considers how the modern concept of “conscience” turns the historic commitment on its head, in a way that underlies the decadence of modern society.
- Religion, Populism, and Modernity: Confronting White Christian Nationalism and Racism, edited by Atalia Omer and Joshua Lupo is part of the Contending Modernities series. This volume examines the recent rise of White Christian nationalism in Europe and the United States.
- Integral Human Development: Catholic Social Teaching and the Capability Approach, edited by Séverine Deneulin and Clemens Sedmak, is the newest title in the Kellogg Institute Series on Democracy and Development. This volume brings into conversation two major moral traditions in the social sciences and humanities that offer common areas for understanding, interpreting, and transforming the world.
- Two new titles will be published in the William and Katherine Devers Series in Dante and Medieval Italian Literature. Dante’s “Vita Nova”: A Collaborative Reading, edited by Zygmunt Barański and Heather Webb, proposes a novel way of reading Dante’s Vita nova, exemplified in a rich diversity of scholarly approaches to the text. [Professort Barański is a Professor Italian Language and Literature at Notre Dame and a Faculty Fellow of the MI.] Meanwhile, Francesco Marco Aresu’s Manuscript Poetics: Materiality and Textuality in Medieval Italian Literature explores the interrelationship between the material features of textual artifacts and the literary aspects of the medieval Italian texts they preserve.
