Mellon Colloquium: Laura Veneskey, “Earthly Icons: Between Matter and Figuration in Early Byzantine Art"

Each year, the Medieval Institute selects an outstanding young scholar for the A. W. Mellon Postdoctoral Fellowship in Medieval Studies, offered since 2001 (read more about our past Fellows). The Fellowship allows a tenure-track assistant professor to pursue research leading to the publication of a monograph. At the conclusion of the Fellow’s period of residency, a panel of senior scholars are invited to campus for a half-day public seminar discussion of the Fellow’s research. The panelists spend additional time with the Fellow in one-to-one conversation and close reading of the draft. After the panel discussion, informal conversation will continue with the speakers and lunch will be provided for audience members.

The 2016-17 Mellon Fellow is Laura Veneskey, Assistant Professor of Ancient, Medieval, and Byzantine Art at Wake Forest University. She will present an overview of her book-in-progress Earthly Icons: Between Matter & Figuration in Early Byzantine Art. Prof. Veneskey received her Ph.D. in 2012 from Northwestern University.
