Professor Cachey specializes in Italian medieval and Renaissance literature, in particular Dante, Petrarch, and Boccaccio, the history of the Italian language, cartography and literature, and travel literature. He has authored or edited several books as well as numerous essays and book chapters. He is founder and co-editor (with Zygmunt G. Baranski and Christian Moevs) of the William and Katherine Devers Series in Dante and Medieval Italian Literature published by the University of Notre Dame Press.
