Thomas F.X. Noble

After twenty years at the University of Virginia, Tom Noble came to Notre Dame in 2000 to serve as Robert M. Conway Director of the Medieval Institute. From 2008 to 2011 he was chair of the History Department. As director Tom inaugurated the annual Conway Lectures, the NEH visiting fellow, and the graduate students’ lecturer. With support from the provost’s office Tom secured an NEH Challenge Grant for Byzantine studies and followed by securing further support from the Niarchos foundation. In 2012 Tom was president of the American Catholic Historical Association and in 2014 he was president of the American Society of Church History (making him only one of only five people to have been president of both). In 1999 Tom was named Alumni Distinguished Professor at Virginia and in 2008 he was named Joyce award for teaching and in 2011 Sheedy award for teaching. Tom’s book Images, Iconoclasm, and the Carolingians won the 2011 Otto Gründler Prize. Tom received three NEH Fellowships, two ACLS grants, two AMPS grants, and as a graduate student he held a Fulbright Fellowship to Belgium. Long a Fellow of the Medieval Academy, he continues to publish.
