Professor Avvakumov specializes in the history of Latin-Byzantine and Latin-Slavic relations in the medieval and early modern periods (11th-17th centuries), with a focus on ecclesiastical and theological aspects of this history. He is also broadly engaged with the history of the papacy and Eastern Christian communities united with Rome. His publications include a monograph on the medieval controversies between Latins and Byzantines (Die Entstehung des Unionsgedankens) and numerous chapters in volumes on medieval ecclesiastical and intellectual history.
